| Libby Boren McMillan Wins Bronze Telly Award |
May, 2009 - "Barnstormers to Blue Angels", a 30-minute
documentary which originally aired on WGCU's Untold Stories program, has won a prestigious Telly Award for its writer
and producer, Fort Myers resident Libby Boren McMillan. The program was a look at the exciting history of private aviation
in southwest Florida, and spanned 100 years in time. McMillan won a 2008 Bronze Telly Award for her efforts.
Founded in 1978, the prestigious Telly Awards is the premier award program honoring outstanding local, regional, and cable
TV commercials and programs, the finest video and film productions, and online film and video. The Telly Awards program
annually showcases the best work of the most respected advertising agencies, production companies, television stations,
cable operators, interactive agencies, and corporate video departments in the world. The Telly Awards receives over
13,000 entries annually from all 50 states and countries around the world.
Telly Awards are given based on the merit of each entry. Entries do not compete with one another. Rather, they compete
against a high standard of excellence. The judges rate each entry on a 100-point scale. Entries with an average score of
70 to 89 are awarded a Bronze Telly statuette for outstanding achievement.
"My father was a pilot," says McMillan, "so I grew up in a small airplane. My husband is also a private
pilot, and I've always enjoyed flying. So when I was approached to produce this particular episode, I quickly said yes.
I had no idea," continued McMillan, "that the history of aviation had so many important events take place right
here in the area where I live. The research was full of surprises."
Winners of 2008 Telly Awards included PBS, PGA Tour Productions, SCI FI Channel, Sports Illustrated, the Weather Channel,
Time Life, Warner Bros., the Golf Channel, AMC, Disney Destinations, LLC., the Christian Broadcasting Network, FamilyNet,
and NBC Universal Global Networks.
Copies of the documentary are available for purchase through WGCU's web site, where the documentary can also be viewed. |
